WEEKLY NEWS REPORT FOR 15-12-2023

We are always on the hunt for your stories and reports, so with us almost finished with the last edition of Ultramag for the year, this is your last call to get those race reports and photographs in to ultramag@aura.asn.au.

  • Word document, single spaced
  • Include the name of the event, the date and the location anywhere in the report (just a bullet point at the top is great)
  • Please attach photographs to the email – do not put images in the body of your Word doc. You’ll just get me emailing you back asking for the photos sent in the correct way!
  • As many photos as possible. With our new website, it’s now easier than ever to include a nice gallery in each race report
  • No PDFs please

And remember, it doesn’t have to be about an AURA-listed event specifically! You just have to be an AURA member for the 2023 year. Also too, if you’ve run in a non-AURA listed event anywhere on home soil or internationally, we’d love to include your race results and experience in our Member Updates, so please do reach out to us via email to kate.dzienis@aura.asn.au

If any corrections need to be made in any of the results listed below, please alert me via email. This is a long one, and I do personally apologise for taking a bit longer to get these results out.

Some additional mentions worth noting are that Maree Connor’s 232.135km is 2nd only in AUS to Bernadette Benson’s 238.261km and looks to be a new AUS W40 age group record for 24h, and that Sharene Blake’s 228.185km is 4th all-time Australian best! In the upcoming December edition of Ultramag, we are featuring a team manager’s report from Matthew Eckford, who provides a detailed account of how everyone performed on the day.

COAST TO KOSCIUSZKO

One of Australia’s favourite ultra events, Coast to Kosciuszko, was held from 1-3 December in NSW from Eden to Charlotte Pass via Mount Kosciuszko.

Race directors Greg and Mickey said this year’s event had it all, from drenching rains and thunderstorms to wildlife and the beautiful night stars. With upwards of 200mm falling in the Eden area two days before race day, and around 100m the day before, it was always going to be a wet start – that meant there was potential the race might not go ahead with Princes Highway cut by swollen rivers.

Rainfall meant 20km of the course was impassable due to road closures. A revised course still on the approved route was supported by a short procession stage, meaning the 2023 Coast to Kosciuszko could still go ahead and runners would get a hard crack at the 240km they’d been training for.

“Six assisted creek and causeway crossings meant a lot of wet feet and a lot of shoe changes for some – and a lot of back and forth for race officials,” they said. “Fallen trees before and after the start were ably addressed by the Towamba locals and their chainsaws – and the Bega Valley Council helped us too.”

The wildlife was abundant with snoozing snakes at CowBail Trail, kangaroos, emus, wombats, echidnas, cows, sheep and a cacophony of frogs for 200km meant runners were never alone.

“The rain kept coming, but our runners kept smiling and were in great spirits the whole way. Gratitude is a wonderful thing and ultra runners have it,” they said. “Thunderstorms (with up to six thunderstorms stacked or ‘trained’ above Mount Kosciuszko) closed the summit during the race, creating a mix of summit finishers (240km) and inclement weather finishers (222km). Coast to Kosci 2023 was a year of firsts – the first ever inclement start with an inclement finish, and a summit finisher and an inclement weather finisher both arriving at Charlotte Pass from opposite ends to meet and embrace at the finish line banner together! Ain’t love grand.”

Before we get onto the results, it’s worth noting that two-thirds of this year’s starters were newbies, and in the end 46 of 53 starters finished for a higher than average finish rate.

“It was wild, amazing, and it doesn’t get any better for the 53 who truly tested themselves against the course and all the elements could provide. Every finisher was rightly celebrated and welcomed to the Coast to Kosci family.”

Onto the results: First Male to finish the 240km was David Vroom, who completed the race in 28:09:00. Second Male in this epic journey was AURA’s Mark Avery from Newington, NSW who finished the distance in a fantastic 28:53:00. Third Male was Matthew Pilley with a time of 29:22:00.

For the women, 1st Female to cross the finish was AURA’s very own Margie Hadley from Henley Brook, WA who’s stellar effort saw her complete the adventure in 32:26:00 whilst AURA president Simone Hayes from Gymea Bay, NSW took 2nd Female after finishing Coast to Kosciuszko in 32:42:00. AURA member Jalna Clair from Kenmore Hill, Qld rounded out the podium with a 3rd Female finish, completing her race with an Inclement Finish of 29:38:00.

Brilliant effort by every single ultra runner at Coast to Kosciuszko, including AURA members Dillon Rinn (30:40:00), Tim Woods (31:03:00), Andrew Heyden (31:50:00), John Walsh (Inclement Finish of 29:49:00), Thomas White (Inclement Finish of 29:52:00), Liv Compton (Inclement Finish of 30:51), Luca Turrini (Inclement Finish of 31:09), Alan Wheat (Inclement Finish of 32:48:00), Nathan Constable (Inclement Finish of 32:57:00), Ramiro Lopez-Pena (Inclement Finish of 33:33:00), Stephen Redfern (Inclement Finish of 34:13:00), Christopher Beavon (Inclement Finish of 34:30:00), Lindsay Hamilton (Inclement Finish of 34:54:00), Mario Buchs (Inclement Finish of 35:09:00), Alex McCann (Inclement Finish of 35:52:00), Kevin Heaton (Inclement Finish of 36:19:00), David Pearce (Inclement Finish of 36:21:00), Simon Neale (Inclement Finish of 36:31:00), Cian Gray (Inclement Finish of 36:50:00), Lisa Sherman (Inclement Finish of 36:54:00), Trevor Allen (Inclement Finish of 37:10:00), Kathryn Austin (Inclement Finish of 37:13:00), Ben Bailey (Inclement Finish of 39:06:00) and Renae Brock (Inclement Finish of 41:02:00).

And a well done to those who made the attempts this year, including Nikki Wynd, Geoffrey Barnes and David Bennie.

*The Towamba BBQ fundraiser for the Towamba public school couldn’t happen due to floodwaters. However the CTK Class of 2023 passed around the Akubra and donated $2,604 to the Towamba public school and it’s 26 pupils. CTK is grateful to all the local communities from Eden to Jindabyne who support and in many ways made the 2023 Coast to Kosciuszko possible.

UPCOMING EVENTS

By Kate Dzienis February 19, 2025
The latest in race results, covering Cradle Mountain Run, City Run, Oscars 100 Hut 2 Hut and Yaberoo Trail Ultra.
By Alexis Oosterhoff January 30, 2025
Results for the 2024 AUTRA Points Competition have been finalised, and are available on our Points Competition page. Full details of the top 10 (as shared on Facebook during January) are detailed below, and results for all participating AUTRA members can be found in the documents at the above link. It was a real battle throughout the year between our top two finishers, Phil Gore & Kevin "BK" Matthews, with both giving it their it their all at events, and through contributions to the community - volunteering at multiple events, and submitting articles to our monthly newsletter, Ultramag. They finished within 2km of total distance for the year (Phil on 1203.087km, and Kevin on 1205.510km), and it was only Phil's final volunteering effort on 6 Inch Trail Marathon in December that gave him the that very narrow victory. As you'd be aware from previous communications, this marks the end of the Points Competition. With trail running (of all distances) now incorporated into AU T RA's constitution, and after careful consideration of the costs of the competition payouts in it's current form, the committee felt it was time for it's retirement. This marks my seventh and final year of delivering the points competition to membership (2018-2024), after taking on the role from Cheryl Symons. It has brought me great joy in doing so, and I feel like I've had an opportunity to get to know so many of our members through seeing their race (and volunteering) performances over the years! I'm continuing in my role as the AUS/NZL statistician for DUV (from whom we shared the data for the points comp), and you can expect to continue to find your ultra-race result on their site. 1st Place - Phil Gore (WA) - 86 points Phil's achievements this year have included a massive 265.653km (and 2nd place) at the IAU 24h Asia & Oceania Championships, wins at the Red Dirt Backyard Ultra (33 laps), the Australian leg of Big Dog's Backyard World Team Championship (96 laps), and the Soochow/Taipei 24h Ultramarathon (270.826km). He also knocked out an easy (!) 72km at the Light Horse Ultra 24h in between supporting his amazing wife Gemma. Those two 24h wins netted Phil new Oceania 24h Open Male records, IAU Level 1 qualifiers, and pushed him to the top of Australia's 24h trophy board (with only the great Yiannis Kouros having run further). Phil topped-up his points by contributing one article to Ultramag, worked as an Event Director at Herdy's Frontyard Ultra, and volunteered at a further five events through the year. He finished on 86 points. 2nd Place - Kevin Matthews (WA) - 84 points Finishing in 2nd place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Kevin Matthews.
