The IAU will now conduct a biannual 100km World Championships event. World Championships have been annual since 1987, with the exception of 2013 when the event was cancelled. The inaugural 100km World Championships event took place in Torhout, Belgium with Domingo Catalan Lera from Spain winning in a time of 6:19:35. That time has not been tested in any World Championships event since. The ladies winner at the 1987 event was Agnes Eberle from Switzerland. Agnes managed a time of 8:01:33.
Australia has a produced a 100km World Champion on one occasion. This was Kirstin Bull in 2016 at Los Alacazeres, Spain who, on November 27 2016, finished with a time of 7:34:25.
AURA will continued to select teams to represent Australia at future 100km World Championships. AURA has a desire to send both a large team and a strong team. Details of future championships and the selection process will be available from this page via documents linked below.
To be considered for selection in general, qualifying standard must be met. Standards may vary for each event. Historically, the primary standard has been sub 7 hours for men (7:20 and 7:40 are B and C qualifiers) and sub 8:30 for women (8:50 and 9:10 are B and C qualifiers). Athletes who have achieved performances in the range of 7:30 to 8:00 for men and 8:40 to 9:20 for women are encouraged to apply.
There are numerous events on the AURA race calendar that can be used for qualifying. Some non-AURA events can be considered for qualifying, including some overseas events. Those seeking to qualify for the team at a non AURA listed event are encouraged to seek approval from AURA first, to ensure that their result will be considered. The IAU status of the event and formality of measurement and timing are paramount in any case where a non AURA listed event may be considered for qualifying. Immediately past World Championship events are always valid for qualifying purposes.
2024 IAU 100 km World Championships are to be held in Bengaluru, India, on the 7th December 2024.
This race will also be host to the World Masters Athletics 100km. Information for registration can be found here and must be separate to the IAU entry.
