WELL, THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG WEEKLY NEWS REPORT on how all of our AURA members went over the weekend with their respective events! As always, if you find any discrepancies at all with your timed result, or have noticed a name missing, please email kate.dzienis@aura.asn.au with the information required.

We are always wanting to publish your race reports too in our monthly Ultramag digital magazine, so please consider putting fingers-to-keyboard and emailing us your experiences – they don’t have to be about AURA listed events either. IRRATIONAL SOUTH

Let’s get the party started with Ultra Series SA’s Irrational SOUTH (Southern Oz Ultimate Trails & Hills), a point-to-point 200 miler kicking off from the historic river port city of Murray Bridge to the beautiful vineyards of the Clare Valley.

It was an unbelievable effort by all entrants who raced in the 200 miler, but the overall winner title was claimed by AURA’s very own Melissa Robertson from Long Jetty, NSW who finished the distance in an unreal 62:03:14. To top it off, she hit up Clare Valley parkrun on the Saturday and finished that in 24:40 – a very well deserved bakery breakfast straight after, Melissa!

Second woman to cross the finish line was AURA member Katherine Macmillan from Kinglake West, Vic who secured her title with a time of 64:45:51. Third Female was Jac Cresp with 69:56:12.

For the men’s battle in the 200 miler, Matthew Woodman took 1st Male with 63:48:07, whilst AURA’s Doug Bartlett, who came in from Willetton, WA held on for a strong 2nd with 67:39:57. Our ever-friendly and chatty Vic Representative, George Mihalakellis from Mount Waverley, claimed 3rd Male with a phenomenal effort of 76:42:45.

Congratulations to all our AURA members who ran in the 200 miler in SA, including Nicola Walters (75:38:18), Sarah Niven (79:43:44), Andy Hewat (79:43:44), Jonathan Ennis-King (89:18:48), Kirsten Maplestone (98:43:57), Ronnette Davies and Dawn Parks.

SANDY RUNNING FESTIVAL

The Sandy Running Festival was held on 9 April and offered a 5km, 10km 35km and 68km race across the SA coastal landscape. The original Sandy 68km route was established as an FKT in 2021, and is now recognised by ITRA as a 2-point course. Participants traverse atop sand, rocks and clifftop boardwalk through 24 beaches and is the ultimate coastal trail running challenge.

Two runners finished the 68km course – Rhys Whiting in 8:16:57 and Ulrich Kuerfgen in 8:19:11.

COBURG 24 HOUR

Held across the weekend (9-10 April), the Coburg 24 Hour Track Carnival was held at the Harold Stevens Athletics Track in Coburg, Vic – and has done so since 1988. This year, on offer was a 24hr, 12hr, 6hr and Marathon distance.

Organiser Tim Erickson yet again put on a spectacular event that everyone in the ultra community looks forward to every year. With both days of racing hitting warm weather, it made for challenging conditions, but all entrants pushed through after making their way to the start line.

Kicking off with the Women’s 24hr, AURA’s Christy Lambert from Romsey, Vic took the lead and secured herself 1stFemale after completing 438 laps and securing herself a total of 175.348km. Another AURA member, Fleur Douy from Coburg, Vic finished on the podium, claiming herself 2nd Female after finishing 416 laps and completing a final total of 166.592 laps. Third Female went to Jaime Stevenson (158.533kms).

To the Men’s 24hr event, 1st Male went to Simon Austin (193.331km), whilst 2nd Male was won by AURA’s Phil Ryanfrom Sunbury, Vic who did 441 laps and finished with a whopping total of 176.582kms. David Patterson took 3rd Male with 163.596km.

A big congratulations to all AURA members who ran in the 24 hour event, including Scott Marden (151.286km), Heather Christison (143.842km), Bill Bardsley (81.282km), Dion Finocchiaro (80.000km), Cassie Smith (72.869km), Duc Do (63.035km) and Ken Marsh (62.205km).

In the Women’s 12hr, AURA’s very own Nicola Wright from Altona, Vic took top honours with 1st Female after completing 193 laps, finalising the distance with 83.250km. Second Female went to Lib Smith (79.271km) and 3rd went to Aovana Timmerman (70.643km).

In the Men’s 12hr, podium spots went to Steven O’Connell (122.636km), Daragh O’Loughlin (118.311km) and Mark Henderson (114.285km).

Well done to absolutely everyone who took on the 12hr event, including Greg Wilson (100.940km), Greg Ponych (55.044km) and John Nuttall (50.314km).

In the Women’s 6hr, Michelle Barwick took 1st Female (53.750km) and Diane Nicholls took 2nd (53.245km). AURA member Tracy Feiner from Beaconsfield, Vic secured herself a sturdy 3rd Female after doing 107 laps and totalling a final distance of 46.013km.

For the Men’s 6hr, Dan Camac held on to take 1st Male (76.144km) but it was AURA member Kevin Muller from Wodonga, Vic who claimed a secure 2nd Male with 74.220km after finishing 172 laps, and AURA’s Kay Bretz from Prahran, Vic who took 3rd Male with 69.749km following 162 laps.

Congratulations to AURA member Stuart Hughes from Belgrave, Vic who finished the 6hr event with 67.311km.

There were also a number of official walking events.

Winners in the Women’s 24hr Walk were Sharon Scholz (161.668km), Linda Christison (149.136km) and Fonibear Williams (60.125km).

Top honours in the Men’s 24hr Walk went to Remy van den Brand (175.029km) and AURA’s own David Billett from Coromandel Valley, SA who took 2nd Male following 382 laps for a total of 170.137km. Andrew Titley took 3rd (162.114km).

Well done to AURA’s Justin Scholz who also took part in the 24hr Walk and finished with 161.223km.

Winners in the Women’s 12hr Walk were Marnie Grace (67.373km), Lorraine Billett (39.192) and Elise Hess (12.024km), whilst winners in the Men’s 12hr Walk were Saul Richardson (64.027km), Albin Hess (54.906km) and Anubhav Tewari (43.115km).

There was one walker in each of the 6hr Women’s and Men’s Walks – Sue Fitton (31.148km) and Ken Carter (22.292km).

BAILEY CENTRE GREAT OCEAN RUN

The Bailey Centre Great Ocean Run was held on 10 April in Red Rock, NSW and offered runners a 45km beach run. Participants got to traverse 5 creek crossings and go over 10 headlands whilst going from Red Rock to Coffs Jetty. It was hosted by Coffs Trail Runners and saw 29 solo runners take on the event.

First to cross the finish line in the Men’s race was AURA member Aaron Dower from Clunes, NSW who took top honours with a finish time of 4:00:34. Chris Fleming took 2nd Male (4:19:19) and Graeme Kirkpatrick took 3rd (4:41:14).

In the Women’s race, it was another AURA member taking the top spot, with Clare Palmer from Glenreagh, NSW taking 1st Female with a speedy 4:01:21. Carol Wingreen got 2nd (5:38:51) and Liz Russell took 3rd (5:49:43).

Big congratulations to AURA’s Kelvin Marshall who finished the race in 6:08:53.

TAMWORTH TRAILBLAZER

Held on 10 April, the Tamworth Trailblazer is a highly technical and challenging race with quite a bit of ascent and descent. The main loop is 15km and runners could elect to do the loop once, twice, or three times.

We are still awaiting results from the Tamworth Trailblazer.

CAIRNS 50 ULTRA

The Cairns 50 Ultramarathon was also held on 10 April, and offered runners a 50km run through the Redlynch Valley Rainforest and cane fields – it is a fast and flat course, perfect for a first timer in ultras. There was also a 30km, 10km and family 5km fun run/walk.

Top podium finishes in the Men’s 50km were Lachlan McIntosh (3:51:56), Ben Melville (3:57:55) and Jarrod Ausburn (4:07:12). For the Women’s 50km, winners were Kerry Labuschagne (4:17:17), Akane Goode (4:21:57) and Sonya Alba-Miller (4:43:10).

UPCOMING EVENTS

Coming up in the next few weeks (and as always, keep an eye on your respective races re COVID cancellations, postponements or changes) we have some cracking events lined up on the AURA calendar.

This weekend is the always anticipated Dead Cow Gully Backyard Ultra in Runnymede, Qld kicking off on 16 April and finishing whenever the last person standing does a lap of the course solo. Race director Timothy Walsh’s Facebook page has been providing previews of who has entered, including AURA’s Chris Murphy who broke the Australian backyard record in 2020 (at the time) running 46 loops at Oxley – and he still had gas left in the tank.

As reports on Facebook go, a new track has been made seeing as there are pools of water preventing a decent run through within The Gully, so expect a decrease of 10m less in elevation per loop.

The Sydney International 100km will be held on 23 April, and will also double up as the Australian 100km Championships (road). Besides the 100km, there is also a 50km and a half marathon on offer.

The Lighthorse Ultra is due to kick off in Woodvale, WA on 23 April and provides runners an option to run in a 24hr, 12hr, 6hr, 3hr or 1hr event. It’s become a tradition to offer free entry to all past and present service men and women, and across the weekend there is a private dawn service for most events.

The GUMBY (Great Ultra Mediocre Backyard Ultra) will be held from 23 April and like all backyard formats, will continue until there is only person left to do a solo 6.7km loop. The Gumby, which recently featured in Trail Run Magazine (edition 42), also offers a GUMBaby event with slightly different rules.

Final 2024 Points Competition Results

Results for the 2024 AUTRA Points Competition have been finalised, and are available on our Points Competition page. Full details of the top 10 (as shared on Facebook during January) are detailed below, and results for all participating AUTRA members can be found in the documents at the above link. It was a real battle throughout the year between our top two finishers, Phil Gore & Kevin "BK" Matthews, with both giving it their it their all at events, and through contributions to the community - volunteering at multiple events, and submitting articles to our monthly newsletter, Ultramag. They finished within 2km of total distance for the year (Phil on 1203.087km, and Kevin on 1205.510km), and it was only Phil's final volunteering effort on 6 Inch Trail Marathon in December that gave him the that very narrow victory. As you'd be aware from previous communications, this marks the end of the Points Competition. With trail running (of all distances) now incorporated into AU T RA's constitution, and after careful consideration of the costs of the competition payouts in it's current form, the committee felt it was time for it's retirement. This marks my seventh and final year of delivering the points competition to membership (2018-2024), after taking on the role from Cheryl Symons. It has brought me great joy in doing so, and I feel like I've had an opportunity to get to know so many of our members through seeing their race (and volunteering) performances over the years! I'm continuing in my role as the AUS/NZL statistician for DUV (from whom we shared the data for the points comp), and you can expect to continue to find your ultra-race result on their site. 1st Place - Phil Gore (WA) - 86 points Phil's achievements this year have included a massive 265.653km (and 2nd place) at the IAU 24h Asia & Oceania Championships, wins at the Red Dirt Backyard Ultra (33 laps), the Australian leg of Big Dog's Backyard World Team Championship (96 laps), and the Soochow/Taipei 24h Ultramarathon (270.826km). He also knocked out an easy (!) 72km at the Light Horse Ultra 24h in between supporting his amazing wife Gemma. Those two 24h wins netted Phil new Oceania 24h Open Male records, IAU Level 1 qualifiers, and pushed him to the top of Australia's 24h trophy board (with only the great Yiannis Kouros having run further). Phil topped-up his points by contributing one article to Ultramag, worked as an Event Director at Herdy's Frontyard Ultra, and volunteered at a further five events through the year. He finished on 86 points. 2nd Place - Kevin Matthews (WA) - 84 points Finishing in 2nd place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Kevin Matthews. He monstered his way through the year with finishes at Australia Day Ultra 100km, Delirious WEST 200mi, 24 laps at Herdy's Frontyard Ultra, 190km at Light Horse Ultra 24h, 23 laps at Birdy's Backyard Ultra, and also completed Feral Pig 100 miler, Sandman 50km and Six Inch 47km. And to top things off, he contributed five articles to Ultramag, and volunteered at five events. BK ran 1205km in Ultramarathon races this year, all of them AUTRA-listed, and surpassed 100 marathon finishes (including 51 Ultramarathons!) Kevin finished the year on 84 points, a massive 34 points ahead of our 3rd place finisher Sue Robertson. 3rd Place - Sue Robertson (WA) - 50 points Finishing in 3rd place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Sue Robertson. Sue completed the Ultra Series 100 miler trilogy of Delirious WEST, Irrational SOUTH and Unreasonable EAST, and rounded out her year with the Sandman 50km and Six Inch 47km races. She received 30 points from the racing at AUTRA-listed events, and was awarded a further 20 points by volunteering across eight events and contributing two articles to Ultramag, for a total of 50 points for the year. Thank you Sue! 4th Place - Margie Hadley (WA) - 47 points Finishing in 4th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Margie Hadley . She was the top-female finisher at both the No Time to Die Frontyard Ultra & Wild Dog Backyard Ultra, 2nd at Birdy's Backyard Ultra, ran 182km at the Australian 24h Track Invitational and placed 3rd at Coast to Kosci. Margie received 47 points in the competition 5th Place - Melissa Robertson (NSW) - 44 points Finishing in 5th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is NSW's Melissa Robertson. Melissa took out 1st place at Irrational SOUTH 200 miler, 2nd place at Lakes Trail Festival 100km, 1st place at Hume & Hovell 100 miler, 3rd place at Rumble in the Jungle and 6th place at Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko 100 miler! She also volunteered at the GNW 50km event, receiving 44 points in the competition! 6th Place - Aaron Young (WA) - 42 points Finishing in 6th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Aaron Young . Aaron finished in 1st place at each of the Ultra Series "Triple Crown" of 200 milers (Delirious WEST, Irrational SOUTH and Unreasonable EAST), 55 laps at Big Dog's Backyard World Team Championship, and rounded his year out with Feral Pig 100 miler. Aaron receives 42 points, just nudging ahead of Maree Connor (who also finished on 42 points) on a count-back 7th Place - Maree Connor (NSW) - 42 points Finishing in 7th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is NSW's Maree Connor. Maree had an outstanding year, achieving 2nd place with 221km (and an IAU Level 1 qualifier) at the IAU 24th Asian and Oceania Championships, 1st place at the Lakes Trail Festival 100km, 1st place with 67km at the Southern Sydney 6h race, and 1st place with 116km at the Narrabeen Allnighter 12h. Maree also competed at Spartathlon race this year (for which she contributed an article to the September Ultramag on her experience), receiving 42 points in the competition. 8th Place - Darren Linney (SA) - 41 points Finishing in 8th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is SA's Darren Linney . Darren completed 34 laps at No Time to Die BYU, 199km at the Adelaide 24h race, and 814km at the Australian 6 Day race, for a total of 1241km raced and 41 points . 9th Place - Tristan Cameron (WA) - 40 points Finishing in 9th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Tristan Cameron. Tristan completed the Ultra Series Triple Crown of 200 mile races (Delirious WEST, Irrational SOUTH and Unreasonable EAST), along with Feral Pig 100 miler, for a total of 1154km raced and 40 points. 10th Place - Jen Millum (WA) - 39 points Finishing in 10th place in the AUTRA 2024 Points Competition is WA's Jen Millum . Jen finished 1st at all three of the Ultra Series Trilogy of 100 milers (Delirious WEST, Irrational SOUTH and Unreasonable EAST), and was 2nd female with 35 laps at the Wild Dog Backyard Ultra. With a volunteer stint at the Yaberoo Trail Ultra, Jen finished the year with 39 points in the competition.
