AURA Annual General Meeting 28 May 2024 Last night we held our AGM and the new committee is pleased to announce that the following elections for positions took place and here are the results. President – SIMONE HAYES Vice President – CORRINA BLACK Secretary – STEPHEN REDFERN Treasurer – ANNABEL HEPWORTH Governance Officer – MYRON (ZED) ZLOTNICK Director of Events – LISA SHERMAN The last two positions are newly created positions, proposed by the 2023 committee, and were voted on by members last night. We congratulate the new committee after an overwhelming vote of confidence shone through from our members, and I really look forward to working with you all in the coming year. The exciting news is that members voted to go ahead with the landmark name change to AUTRA – a powerful move that will bring cohesion to our sport, bringing unprecedented benefits to our grassroots and elites alike. In due course, when our paperwork is complete, we will be officially known at the Australian Ultra and Trail Runners Association. Members also voted in favour of the changes to the incorporated association’s Rules to include the word ‘trail’ with ultra. For the past year AURA has been in discussion with the trail associations in Australia to look at forming one large federation that recognises both ultra and trail as one. In November 2023 we held a conference to further investigate the possibility of bringing the trail community into our association and what the benefits would be for AURA and its members. What ensued was an overwhelming realisation that this move needs to happen to ensure the longevity of AURA. We saw only positives, and forged ahead with a plan to take AURA into the next decade and beyond as a strong and productive association, whilst still preserving its purpose and rich history which is of the utmost importance to us. It’s been a favourite for trail lovers for decades. Belair National Park is one of Australia’s oldest national parks, established back in 1891, and now it’s become the epicentre for the incredible Belair Marathon. It’s not for faint hearted, with close to 1500m of elevation gain. But it’s an undeniably appreciated environment with stunning lands and scenery. Distances on offer include a 5k, 10k and half marathon, whilst for the ultra runner in us, there’s a 50k. We would love to hear who here is racing at the Belair Marathon this Saturday (2 March)? The Sandman 50 is a 50km even from Old Dunsborough boat ramp to Busselton Jetty and back. The course is entirely on the beach at low tide, with the nominal race line being within 3m of the water’s edge.  Kicks off Saturday, 24 February for solo entrants and teams of two. 🦘Tomorrow’s the day of ADU! The Australia Day Ultra is one of those events so many West Aussies look forward to on the AURA calendar of events. It’s held on what’s considered a flat and fast out-and-back course along the foreshore of Australind, a little town about 175km south of Perth, with options of a 25km, 50km, 75km and 100km. This is one of those really beautiful courses because it’s right along the water, and the start/finish is just a hive of activity every time runners come through. It’s the perfect PB course. Who’s running in the Great Southern Stage Run this weekend?! Go the Green & Gold! This Sunday (5 Nov) is the IAU World 50km Road Championships in Hyderabad, India at Sukoon Ground at the University of Hyderabad. The Aussie flag will be represented by Wayne Spies (Captain), Ben MacCronan and Tim Brimelow, who are all raring to go. The course has been listed as a 5km loop (due to a changed location, it is now 5km instead of the earlier 10km) with a flat asphalt surface. A total of 20 federations will be taking part, with 102 athletes participating. The Hume & Hovell Ultra will be held across both Saturday and Sunday, with participants travelling along the Hume & Hovell Walking Track in NSW. But Did You Know? The track was constructed in 1988, following as closely as possible the historic route taken by explorers Hume and Hovell on their 1824 expedition to Port Phillip Bay. The GV Last One Standing is northern Vic’s only backyard ultra event, held just two hours north of Melbourne in Shepparton. If you’re looking for a race to support and send out your ‘Woo Hoo!’s to, then why not head along and see what backyard ultras are all about?! 3 sleeps to go, and it’s Run Larapinta day! Believe it or not, the event sold out way back in October last year, with 200 participants signing up as soon as entries opened. Held in the Red Centre, the long course (Malbunka) is 128km of rugged terrain while the short course (Namatjira) is a decent 82km, two fantastic distances for endurance runners! This weekend (Saturday, 12 August) is the Berry Long Run in stunning Lerderderg State Park, Blackwood, Vic where runners will traverse forest and catch views of splendid vistas where gorge after gorge rolls away into the distance. On offer is a 70km for ultra runners, with a very generous 12 hour cutoff, and there’s also a 40km available. Fun fact for ya: the Berry Long Run started unofficially on August 15 way back in 2014 when three runners set out to raise money for Berry Street – there was some getting lost, bush blashing, and injury along the way but overall when you take away those three factors, it was a resounding success. Thus the BLR was born! The kunanyi Trail Series is fast becoming a favourite amongst Tassie ultra runners, and this Sunday (6 Aug) is the series’ Tolosa Half & Tolosa Quarter which offers Enduro 21km and Sport 10km distances out of Melaleuca, Tolosa Park, Glenorchy. The Tolosa Half is the kTS’s most popular course in the series – it’s truly an authentic mountain half mara with diversity and lots of challenges. Although not necessarily an event with ultra distances, we still encourage our AURA members to enter these events because with more participants, there are greater opportunities for race organisers to consider inputting ultra options in the years to come. It’s that time of year again! Birdy’s Backyard is back! Kicking off tomorrow (Fri, 4 Aug) around Lake Towerinning in regional WA, how long will it go for? Until Sunday? Maybe Monday or Tuesday? It’s a weekend of camping, maybe some glamping, bonfires, and of course…loop de loop de loop de loop. Every single runner is guaranteed a DNF – except for one (anyone else getting Highlander vibes here? There can be only one…no? Just me?). In 2019 and 2020, it was Michael Hooker, and in 2021 and 2022 it was Phil Gore. The stakes are high, all eyes will be on Birdy’s this weekend. Ultra Adelaide by IoMerino kicks off tomorrow (Saturday, 8 July) in SA, starting up in the mountains and allowing you to reconnect to the trails as you run down into the heart of the city. The race tackles the Heysen Trail from Kuitpo, North through the hamlets of the Hills, to Mount Lofty and beyond through Brown Hill and Morialta before following the Torrens River down to the finish. All runners are catered to with 4 distance options, but for the ultra runners there’s a 100km and a 50km. 3 Marathons in 3 Days is another AURA-listed event for this weekend! Race founder Larry Lawson has claimed that this particular ultra-marathon came about by ‘accident’, as there was a ‘Run A Marathon in Three Days’ event on the race calendar in Cairns in 2012, but Larry said ‘I’ll do 3 marathons in 3 days’, and soon he had enlisted other runners to join him. It’s a popular event for those clocking up their marathons, and ultra runners who want to get their hands on a multi-day event. From Kuranda to Cedar Park (Koah area) to Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, it’s held from 7-9 July this year and participants can aim for the 3M3D Grand Slam (a marathon over 3 consecutive days) or just do one or two distance options within the event. FUN FACT 1: AURA member Joshua Duff holds the 3M3D Grand Slam race record (2021) with 12:22:06 on the current ‘new’ course.
